Hiking in the Gurgl Alps

With over 21 three thousand metre peaks und numerous glaciers, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is absolutely ideal for mountain enthusiasts. The nearly infinite hiking possibilities up to the glacier moraines and a natural Alpine zoo with comical groundhogs and herds of mountain sheep and goats make the Ötztal Nature Reserve something special.

One can leisurely hike from hut to hut (4 Alpine Association huts - Schönwies hut (2262 m), Ramolhaus (3005 m), Hochwildehaus (2866 m) and the Karlsruhe hut (2430 m).

Theme hikes:

Piccard route
Across the large Gurgl glacier to the landing place of the stratosphere balloon of Professor Auguste Piccard in 1931. After the ascend to the Karlsruhe hut and the Schwärzenkamm ridge you arrive at the Hochwildehaus (2900 m). The descend across the Gurgle glacier and Ramolweg with its unique mountain flora is especially impressive.

Garnet route
In the Gaisberg and Rotmoos valleys along the glacier nature trail and crossing over into the Mutsattel. The discovery place of the Ötz Valley Almandin garnet is a special attraction for mineral collectors. 

Forest and water route
A guided tour through the 200 year-old natural monument the Zirbenwald (Swiss Stone Pine Forest), an excellent teaching path of the Obergurgl Alpine Research Station. Past the red moss waterfall you reach the Schönwieshütte and visit the 6000 year-old high-level moor in the red moss valley.
